Mexico announced its Independence from Spain on September 10, 1810, and started their revolt on September 16, 1810. Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla was a Mexican Roman Catholic , who rebelled against the Spanish government in Mexico.People in Mexico were already in distress for being treated badly, and the racial inequality by the Spanish government. The American revolution had proven that colonies can revolt against their mother country, and Mexico began their fight for independence.
The Mexican Revolution started in Europe, where the French emperor Napoleaon, invaded and occupied Spain from 1808-1813. This had more an more Spanish colonies wanting to revolt against their mother country. When Hidalgo anounced Mexico's independence, he started the revolution, and the first major battle was at Calderón in 1811. 80,000 untrained rebels that were mostly peasants and natives without firearms, fought against 6,000 well trained royalist with, firearms, artillary, cavalry, and able officers. During the battle quality beat out quanity, and the royalist won the battle at Calderón, and Hidalgo's army was defeated. Hidalgo retreated north, but was later captured, and executed by firing squad. Hidalgos crys for indpendence lasted for another 10 years until, on Agust 24, 1821 Viceroy Juan de O'Donojú singed the Treaty of Córdoba, which approved a plan to make Mexico a independent constitutional monarchy.
